Description
The foundation of Sancerre is controversial. Some historians attribute it to Julius Caesar, others to a Saxon colony that would have been established during the reign of Charlemagne. It is certain, however, that it dates back to the early Middle Ages, before the year 1000, and that a castle was built on this privileged site.
Thus, from the sixteenth century, and very precisely in 1513, the local archives mention the family MELLOT. This family was already living at the steady pace of the vineyard and quality wine. At the beginning of the 19th century, ALPHONSE MELLOT creates in Sancerre an inn, where he makes appreciate the wines of the country and thus gives to his trade a success that will not stop. In 1881, a license is granted that allows him to ship his wine in France and around the world. This is the beginning of a peaceful conquest, and since that date, the family home continues to expand, from father to son, the eldest of each generation bears the name of the founder.
It is thus that Alphonse MELLOT father and son (respectively 18th and 19th of the name), perpetuate this old wine tradition. The wines are produced from the high vineyards of Sancerre whose famous is the “DOMAINE LA MOUSSIERE”. Its exceptional quality has earned it to be the only one in Sancerrois to benefit from the prestigious mention “hors concours”. DOMAINE LA MOUSSIERE has an area of more than thirty hectares, in one piece.
Its privileged exposure to the southwestern tip of Sancerre, its limestone soil and its subsoil, bring together all the elements necessary for the cultivation of the vine.
Sancerre blanc is the product of a noble grape variety “sauvignon”, a small grape with close grains, whose origin is very old. With its finesse, its bouquet and its fruit, Sancerre occupies a prominent place in the hierarchy of white wines.
