Description
Domaine La Soumade was created in 1979 by André ROMERO. In 1990, this passionate winemaker will make every effort to have the production sold exclusively in bottles. After obtaining his B.E.P.A. in Viticulture and oenology, he is joined in 1996 by his son Frédéric. The vines range from 30 to 50 years old.
In 2022 a new modern winemaking building was built and it is also the beginning of the collaboration with the famous consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team. He sets up softer and more precise winemaking methods to extract the quintessence of this over-vigorous terroir. The wines will definitely gain finesse and purity. The vineyard currently has 26 hectares in the village of Rasteau and 1 hectare located in Gigondas: a small terraced vineyard, near the Dentelles de Montmirail. The entire vineyard is managed with a minimum of interventions so that the wine produced reflects the soil (clay-limestone).
They only use organic fertilizers in case of deficiencies found by analysis (Vegéthumus, composted local manure). Phytosanitary treatments (mildew, oïdium) are only done with sulfur and copper, and always based on the risks due to the climate, the grapes and plots sensitivity. The harvest is always done manually. The grapes are deposited and then sorted on a sorting table. The wine-making process is traditional with “pigeages” and daily pumping in the stainless-steel vats. The macerations last between 18 to 25 days. The maturation is about 18 months, for 70% in wooden vats and 30% in cement tanks.
